Corrections Policy

Published material here will sometimes be wrong. What matters is what happens next. Corrections are made on the page itself, visibly, and are not quietly edited away.

How to report an error

Use the contact page and choose the correction topic. The report that gets resolved fastest contains three things:

  • Where. The page address, and the passage quoted or described well enough to locate.
  • What. What the text says, and what it should say instead.
  • Why, if you have it. A rule number, a document, a link. Helpful, not required — a specific objection with no citation still gets checked against the primary source.

Reports are read by the person who writes the material, not by a support queue. There is no account to create and no form length to defeat.

What happens after

  1. Acknowledged. Corrections are answered first in this inbox, usually within a few business days.
  2. Checked against the source. Not against the article, and not against whatever other sites say. Against the rule, the document, or the data the claim rests on.
  3. Fixed, or explained. If the claim was wrong it is corrected. If it was right, the reply says why and names the source — which is itself often a sign the article was unclear, in which case the wording gets fixed too.

How a correction appears on the page

By severity, because treating every change the same way makes the serious ones invisible.

  • A substantive error — a wrong figure, a misstated rule, a recommendation that followed from either — is corrected in the text, and a dated correction note is added to the page saying what the text previously said. The old claim is quoted in the note. Removing the evidence of a mistake is not a correction.
  • A clarification — the facts held, the wording misled — is rewritten and dated in the page’s revision note.
  • A typographical or formatting fix is made without a note, because a change log full of typos hides the changes that matter.
  • Superseded material — a rule amended, a price changed, a product discontinued — is updated, dated, and where the previous position matters for understanding, it stays visible as the previous position.

What is not a correction

Disagreement is not error. A request to remove an accurate statement because it is commercially inconvenient for the requester will be declined, and so will a request to add a link, a mention or a favorable comparison. Those arrive regularly; they are not corrections and are not treated as any.

Equally, a competitor pointing out a genuine mistake gets the same treatment as anyone else. The source of a correct report does not change whether it is correct.

Corrections the studio finds itself

Material that depends on advertising rules, search-engine behavior or pricing is reviewed periodically. An error found in-house is corrected the same way as one reported by a reader, with the same note on the page. A correction policy that only applies to errors someone else caught is a complaints process, not a policy.
